STI Index: Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads through direct contact with syphilitic sores during sexual activity. The infection progresses in stages: primary (painless sores), secondary (rash and flu-like symptoms), latent (no symptoms), and tertiary (serious complications like organ damage). Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics, especially in its early stages.
Left untreated, it can lead to severe health issues, including neurological and cardiovascular damage. Testing and early treatment are crucial to prevent complications and transmission.
